Politics often calls for weighing your options and the strengths and weaknesses of different leaders to determine who is better suited to lead. In this article, I urge you to follow me as we together run a comparison of Governor Hope Uzodimma, the governorahip candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the November 11 gubernatorial election – the incumbent Governor, and Athan Achonu, the governorship candidate of the Labour Party (LP) for the same election, focusing on their accomplishments, leadership style, and potential for positive change.
To start with, Governor Hope Uzodimma’s achievements speak eloquently for themselves – res ipso loquito. Since his assuming office in January 2020, Governor Hope Uzodimma has made notable strides in the development of Imo State. One of his key accomplishments is the restoration of peace and security, which has allowed for increased investments and economic growth in the state. Mean political players unleashed mayhem on the state in order to derail the new Uzodimma administration. Thinking that they could orchestrate insecurity to make the state ungovernable and get the federal authorities to declare a state of emergency and probably illegally remove the Governor, they went the whole haul in their plans to foist insecurity in the state.
Today. the Governor has weathered the storm, and there is improved security in the state as he has restored peace and security in many communities that were hitherto known as hotbeds of insecurity. Uzodimma has also prioritized infrastructure development, with several road construction projects, renovation of public schools, and building new ones. Additionally, his administration has revamped the healthcare system, leading to improved access to quality healthcare for residents. With the brand new three general hospitals recently built and equipped by the Governor, Imo people are sure of accessing quality healthcare services.
Secondly, Governor Hope Uzodimma’s leadership style is unique and impressive. He is popular for his proactive and decisive leadership style. It takes a man with the kind of leadership style and decisive courage to weather the storm and stabilize the ship of state in the kind of hostile environment the Governor found hinself. He listens to the concerns of the people and takes prompt action to address them. He has shown a commitment to accountability and transparency by initiating reforms that promote good governance, especially reforms in the civil service. His policy of inclusiveness as a strategic approach to governance has fostered cooperation between various stakeholders and gave the people a sense of belonging and commitment, leading to effective policy implementation and development.
Thirdly, Governor Hope Uzodimma has the potential to drive positive change. He has demonstrated a clear vision for the development of Imo State, and the evidence is everywhere. His policies are geared towards improving education, healthcare, infrastructure, and employment opportunities. Uzodimma has prioritized youth engagement and empowerment through various skill acquisition programs, entrepreneurship initiatives, and support for small and medium-sized enterprises. His emphasis on sustainable development and investments in key sectors positions Imo State for long-term growth and progress.
On the other hand, Athan Achonu does not have an impressive track record. He is currently enmeshed with allegations of embezzlement of funds meant for the federal government’s contract to build 774 healthcare centers across the 774 local government areas of the country. In the whole of the 27 LGAs of Imo State, Achonu is accused of not building any hospital, even when the state government is still repaying the contract fund to the federal government. Yet Achonu wants to be the governor of Imo State.
Unlike the Governor, who is humble. pious and respectful, Achonu is brash, haughty, and flippant. To Achonu, money is everything, and his love for money is legendary. He believes he has the money to buy the state or buy the votes of the people. These traits are in contrast to Uzodimma’s contentment and ability to overcome greed. To Uzodimma, money does not matter much, as what matters the most is impacting the lives of others.
Apart from Achonu’s haughtiness, an honest evaluation of his political experience and track record shows that he is still far away on the line. Without any previous experience as a governor, it becomes difficult to assess his ability to effectively lead and implement policies for the betterment of Imo State, whereas Governor Hope Uzodimma has gannered the experience and has already demonstrated the capacity to lead the state and implement policies that will address critical needs of the state. To even attempt to present a fair comparison on Achonu’s political experience, it is crucial to analyze his achievements and concrete plans he has for the state.
Disappointingly, Achonu has since demonstrated that he does not even have a good grasp of the issues confronting the state and has since shown no plans to address the needs of the state. He is rather engaging in platitudes. He may lay claim to being a former Senator, but he was Senator for only six months, and the court righteously removed him. Compare his stint at the Senate with Uzodimma’s full eight years as a Senator, and then you would see clearly the difference between apple and orange. Six months is too short for anyone to have learnt much in the Senate. Achonu does not have a comparable legislative experience as the Governor.
Governor Hope Uzodimma has proved his mettle as a leader through tangible achievements and a proactive leadership style. His accomplishments in promoting peace, infrastructure development, and healthcare reform demonstrate his commitment to the well-being of Imo State. That the Governor has been able to tame the tide of insecurity and as well put in place critical infrastructure for the development of the state amidst the myriads of challanges that reared up as soon as he became Governor is worthy of commendation. While Athan Achonu may be qualified by law to run for the governorship election, it takes just legal qualifications to become governor of Imo State. Achonu’s lack of experience in governance raises serious concerns about his ability to drive positive change in Imo State.
It is essential for citizens to make an informed decision when electing leaders who will chart the course of their states. Despite the need to remain objective and explore various perspectives, Governor Hope Uzodimma’s proven track record in governance positions him as a better candidate compared to Athan Achonu. The future success and progress of Imo State depend on a leader who can build upon past accomplishments and inspire positive change for the benefit of its people, and Governor Hope Uzodimma has demonstrated without a shred of a doubt that he has the capacity to do all that.
