Leveraging on the recently passed bill on establishing Eastern Waste Management Incorporated, the state house of assembly has passed a motion titled: MOTION TO DIRECT THE MINISTRIES OF ENVIRONMENT, ENTRACO, AND OTHER RELEVANT SANITATION AGENCIES TO EMBARK ON MASS MOBILIZATION OF OUR IMOLITES TO ENGAGE IN CLEARING AND DESILITING OF THEIR GUTTERS,WATER WAYS/CANALS TO AVOID FLOODING AS THE RAINING SRASON APPROACHES

Presenting the motion before the Deputy Speaker Rt. Hon Amara Chyna Iwuanyanwu, who presided the plenary , Hon. Kingsley Ozurumba said that the motion was based on exigency and compounded by the current activities of our state, and because we are approaching the rains, this is the best time for this motion to come on board.
In his words, ” We are having challenges with climate change, challenges with the nature of our lifestyle in this part of the world and those challenges cause lot of pain, property loss and life loss.”

Hon Kingsley maintained that it is their responsibility as lawmakers to change and direct Imolites, especially when situations warrant a particular kind of direction to go.
He opinionated that Imo state as part of the global village has experienced its own challenges arising from climate weather situations like drought, flooding, and excessive weather conditions leading destruction of lives and properties.
The Isu representative reminded his colleagues that the 3R Administration of Senator
Hope Uzodimma have put a very serious infrastructure on flood control in Owerri metropolis through the provision of the Ballon Technology on flood control around the Chukwuma woha /MCC road axis to have a central control and the procurement of waste evacuation trucks and machines.
Hon Ozurumba expressed worries that the Ballon Technology will not be effective if imolites are not made to be disciplined in their ways of managing waste disposal, clearing of the water ways, water canals in the state.
According to him,” It behold on our people to begin to articulate on how to change our lifestyle by putting the drainages clean, not obstruct the canals, open up channels so water can find its cause.”
He called his fellow members to support the motion, which is timely and apt.
Speaking in support of the motion, Hon. Chisom Ojukwu of Nkwerre state constituency congratulated the sponsor of the motion for bringing to the consciousness and conscientization of Imolites before the rains become heavy.
Ojukwu insisted that ” It is not enough to say we have directed these people to do this. We should go beyond that because this is a very serious issues and if not properly checked, everywhere will be blocked, and once this happens, we will run into problems, and the flooding will be disastrous.”
In addition to the prayers contained in the motion, Hon. Chisom proposed a collaborative meeting with both the Ministry of Environment , Imo State Waste Management Agency ( ISWAMA), Owerri Capital Development Authority (OCDA) and other relevant agencies to be invited to the House for the purpose to ascertain their plan and what they want to do before the rain becomes very heavy.
Also, Hon. Samuel 6 Isiala Mbano, who spoke in favor of the motion, emphasized that Imo State can not afford to experience floods again as he thanked His Excellency Senator Hope Uzodimma for bringing succor and aid to Amuzari community in Isiala Mbano when they flood crisis.
After deliberations, the deputy speaker read the following prayer, which received a unanimous answer without desenting voice.
The prayers are as follows:
- Be it resolved by this Honorable House to direct the Commissioner in charge of the Ministry of Environment, General Manager of ENTRACO, and other relevant sanitation agencies and departments of government, to embark on proactive steps to engage and mobilize Imolites to clear their environments and avoid obstructing water qays/canals for flow of flood water during the rainy season , in other to avoid flooding in the state.
- Be it further resolved by this Honorable House to direct th4 Commissioner in charge of Environment. General Manager of ENTRACO and other relevant sanitation agencies and departments of government to interface with House Committee on Environment.
The Clerk Chinelo Emeghara Esq was directed to write and convey to the commissioner in charge of the Ministry of Environment, General Manager ENTRACO, and other relevant sanitation agencies and departments government of the House resolution.
