UZODIMMA CELEBRATES WORLD TEACHERS DAY, PROMISES TO IMPROVE CONDITION OF SERVICE, DOMESTICATE 40 YEARS OF SERVICE OR 65 YEARS OF AGE FOR TEACHERS’ RETIREMENT POLICY
“If you can read and write, thank your teacher” is a slogan that invokes joy to teachers and it’s a lucid illustration of the importance of teachers in the development of humanity.
Sen. Hope Uzodimma, the governor of Imo State recognised the importance of teachers conveyed in his speech addressed to teachers of imo State at the world Teachers Day Celebration held at Rear Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu Square, Owerri.
According to the governor, he is not only touched by the importance of teachers, but reserves huge respect for them because himself, his wife and children were taught by teachers, which defined the trajectory of development for his people, the reason for the height attained.
Governor Uzodimma responded to the call by the state chairman of NUT to domesticate the policy of extending retirement age, which he said has already been approved at the national level.
Adding, the governor expressed his resolve to not only improve the condition of service of teachers but to make teaching s profession of pride such that teachers will only be people who truly have the passion to teach and not people who only are accidentally involved because of not having another alternative. He insisted that that returning the pride of teaching as a profession calls for improving the conditions of service and making teachers feel like being partners in governance. The governor went further to say that teachers have ceased to be just employees and are now partners in governance.
The governor further announced that he has issued the directive to adjust the salary structure of teachers to reflect the new realities and restore pride of the profession, through attractive package.
Governor Uzodimma affirmed that teaching is the most Noble profession because there is no profession without the touch of teachers.
The Commissioner for Education, Prof. Johncliff Nwadike chaired the event and teachers across all the local government areas filed past in March past to salute the governor.
The NUT Chairman presented double award of honour to the governor. First a golden pen award presented to him, first of its kind in the country and another award of sustainability and continuity of good governance was also presented to him in recognition of their adoption of the governor as a sole candidate for the coming election.
