Lady Theodora Uchenna, Technical Assistant to IMO State Governor on Water, Sanitation and Hygiene(WASH) Speaks on Importance of Food Hygiene in Commemoration of the World Food Hygiene/Saftey Day 7th June 2023.
One of the 5 Domains of Hyigene is food Hygiene along side others which include Safe Excreta Disposal, Environmental Hygiene, Safe Water Chain, Personal Hygiene/Hand Washing at Critical Times.
The World today reminds us all on the importance of Food Hygiene and it’s link to Human Health and Well Being as well as general Public health.
Foodborne diseases can be costly and dangerous to the extent that it affects individual Health, Social Bonding(time spent in the hospital), causes Malnutrition and linked to Poverty.
To prevent these consequences; proper food safety measures has to be adopted which includes:
- Proper washing of fruits with salt or vinegar before consumption.
- Proper cooking of food especially meat and other proteinous foods before eating.
- Washing of our hands effectively with soap under runny water before eating
- Covering of our cooked food from flies who are the major carriers of diseases and infections
- Protection of our cooking utensils from flies, and household animals such as dogs, goat, sheep etc
Many women have lost hours of social bonding as a result of time spent in the hospital taking care of their children who are infected of food poisoning because of improper food managment
Many children have also lost school hours sleeping in the hospitals suffering from most common food bacteria’s such as E. coli, Salmonella, and Listeria.
As the world marks Food Safety Day Today, we call on Households, food processing companies , hotels , restaurants and everyone; to revive their consciousness on the Cons of Food poisoning and maintain food saftey for the healthcare of all.
