The Nigeria Association of Women journalists NAWOJ Imo State chapter will partner the State branch of Women Optometrists in Nigeria WON to promote Eyecare and educational programs of women and children at the grassroots.
The State Chairman of NAWOJ Dr Dorothy Nnaji made this known when Women Optometrists in Nigeria Imo State Chapter led by Dr Mrs Amarachi Opara and members of their association paid her a courtesy visit in her office in Owerri.
Dr Dorothy Nnaji stated that the association is ready to champion the eye health and overall well-being of women and girls in Imo State.
She emphasized that NAWOJ as an association champions the cause of women,girls, and children and would definitely give her support in ensuring that these groups of persons eyesight are protected and adequate care given where necessary.
Dr Nnaji reiterated that “association will provide any necessary support within their capacity to promote the programmes and projects of the group in a bit to ensure good eye health among women and girls.”
Stating the purpose of their visit, Dr Amarachi Opara pointed out that, the visit is to enhance co-operation with other recognised professional women associations to foster the cause of womanhood and promote eye health especially among rural women and children.
Dr Opara, who described vision and eyesight as the largest portal of entry of information to the brain, noted that the eye sight of every human must be preserved to perform at its optimum.
She noted that the role of women at home can not be underrated, hence the need to ensure adequate care of their sights and the overall wellness for a better society.
Dr Opara outlined some of the primary eye care services of the association since it’s inception both at the national and state levels to include provision of free screening and eye glasses to women and children and advocacy for enactment of children’s vision bill as a prerequisite for commencement of academic learning among others.
She also called for more collaboration amongst relevant stakeholders and media during the forth coming annual celebration of international day of the girl child on 11th October of which the association is working towards provision of free vision screening and glaucoma testing to women and girls across selected communities in the state.
The immediate past Chairperson, Dr Oluchi John Isiodu, pointed out that it’s disheartening at the level at which the literate patronize quacks knowing the importance of eyes . That is why the Women Optometrists in Imo decided to embark on free vision screening and distribution of glass if needed.
Moreso, the Vice Chairman of NAWOJ Comrade Vivian Chinenye Iwu, the Secretary of NAWOJ Comrade Chika Ewurum spoke in support of the opinion of Dr Dorothy Nnaji, stressing that eyesight is critical to the affairs of women and girl child and further stressed the readiness of the Association to work hand in glove not just with women optometrists but other women groups to champion the affairs of girls and women.
